Complaints rise last year over domain names

The UN copyright agency that arbitrates more than half the world's cybersquatting cases saw a 25 per cent increase in complaints last year.

The World Intellectual Property Organization received 1,823 complaints in 2006, alleging abusive registrations of trademarks as Internet domain names.

The growing number of professional domain name dealers who use computer software that automatically registers expired domain names or temporarily registers them without paying charges, is of concern to trademark owners, WIPO said.

Most of last year's disputes have been resolved.

I'm more concerned with the number of companies with trademarks, that are abuseing the system by trying to hijack domains.

They could solve this problem and save a lot of hassle by giving trademark companies domains rights, only to there specific county of origin extension. Plus any other country that they have a trademark.

I share your concern Rusty. "Domainers" are receiving alot of negative light in the news lately with domain tasting. I've already seen several ICANN decision which stated that the complaintant was attempting to hijack the domain name.

I've got 3 domains in WIPO battles right now.

I can't say how pissed off I am that a company that is too asleep at the wheel to register ALL of the extensions for their names could just come along after you've built up a site and "DEMAND" that you just hand it over.

Regardless of if you are even in the same ball park as them.

I understand if I'm setting up an affiliate doorway site to their competitors using thier name.

But if the site has NOTHING to do with their business ... I feel like it's just as much of a crime for them to be able to simply TAKE the domain from you without any sort of compensation AT ALL - even the original registration fee.

I think that's what the sunrise period is for, if they miss that, then too bad ... pay for it like the rest of the world or live without it.
